UP AND RUNNING

Resident Stallion Churchill Downs has made a flying start to the 2011-2012 racing season with him currently sitting second on the 2nd Season Sire List by Earnings. With winners at Bendigo and Geelong on the strong Victorian provincial circuit at the start of August and with Emerald Downs' strong win at Rosehill on Saturday, the cracking son of Danehill is starting to leave his mark on the 2nd Season Sires List.

Emerald Downs herself is a half sister to another resident BGF stallion in Turffontein and is the 7th live foal for Dr Grace mare Spirit of Grace. Her win in Saturday's Keune Handicap over 1100m first up from a spell against the older mares was a tremendous result for her breeder and long time client Pat Carroll. The win also highlighted Anthony Cummings affinity for Spirit of Grace's progeny. He first purchased a Redoute's Choice Filly, who raced as Lady Gracious for $250,000 at the 2005 Easter Yearling Sale. He has subsequently purchased Turffontein (Johannesburg) for $70,000 at the 2006 Premier Yearling Sale, Frere Dan (Danzero Colt) out of the 2007 Blue Gum Farm Premier Draft for $90,000, Raised to Rock (Elvstroem Colt) out of the 2008 Blue Gum Farm Premier Draft for $140,000, Emerald Downs was purchased out of the 2010 Blue Gum Farm Premier Draft for $135,000 and Anthony has since purchased the full brother to Emerald Downs for $200,000 out of the Blue Gum Farm 2011 Premier Yearling Draft.

As you can see there is plenty of admiration for the family from Anthony Cummings and with good reason through the deeds of horses such as Turffontein and Emerald Downs. With Turffontein embarking on his stud career and Emerald Downs looking to strut her stuff over the 2011 Spring Carnival one can only imagine the family continuing to progress. Further to this with himself having some 98 foals from his first crop now having just turned Three Years Old we look forward to them coming of age through the stables of Anthony Cummings, David Hayes, Graham Begg, Peter Moody, John Hawkes, etc.

With this sort of upside you can quickly see this son of Danehill leaving his mark on the 2nd Season Sire List.
