Ah those Golden Slippers

Ah those Golden Slippers

After allowing ourselves a couple of weeks to enjoy She Will Reign’s magnificent victory in this year’s Golden Slipper, it is interesting now to reflect on her sire Manhattan Rain’s connection with the world’s richest two year old race.

As a two year old himself, Manhattan Rain had won the Group 3 Skyline Stakes at Randwick leading up to the Group 1 Golden Slipper. He finished third in the 2009 running of the Slipper before going on to win the Sires and finish third in the Champagne. A pretty darn good two year old season by any calculation. Of course Manhattan Rain went on to place in other stallion making races like the WS Cox Plate and Caulfield Guineas at three but it’s interesting to see how his own progeny have gone on and performed in the Golden Slipper Stakes.

With only four crops of racing age, Manhattan Rain has had a very real hope leading in to each of the last two Golden Slippers. In 2016 his ultra talented filly Scarlet Rain went in to the Slipper as an undefeated Group 2 winner of the Sweet Embrace Stakes and two other Sydney two year old events. She came out of the Slipper that year a little the worse for wear but is already back to her winning ways this year as a three year old.

This year of course She Will Reign went in to the Slipper after winning the rich Inglis Nursery (RL) and the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes. She came out of the great race a very, very dominant winner. She Will Reign has been spelled after that remarkable victory with three year old Spring riches in mind. After a two year old career that has netted four wins and a second and $2,555,150 in stakes, She Will Reign must surely rate as a second to none chance to be crowned Australia’s Champion Two Year Old.

So what of next year’s Golden Slipper? Will another of Manhattan Rain’s progeny go in to the race a strong chance on the back of some brilliant lead up form? Will another come out of it a dominant winner like She Will Reign? His yearlings this year, two year olds of next, have already sold to $360,000 indicating that there are plenty of quality individuals coming through. His 2017 service fee has been set at a most reasonable $19,250 including GST. Don’t miss out on being part of the excitement that is Manhattan Rain.
