archive News on Blue Gum Farm

As we had highlighted earlier this year we have been hearing good reports about the first crop of Churchill Downs, with only his 4th runner he has registered his first win, a Metropolitan win and a very impressive one at that.

Emerald Downs (2YO Filly x Spirit of Grace - pictured above as a yearling) dominated the Electrical Trades Union Handicap over 1200m at Moonee Valley to win eased up by 2 Lengths. Glen Boss gave her a lovely run in transit just behind the speed and when he called upon her at the turn she raced clear. The result is obviously very pleasing for all concerned, importantly Co-Owner and Breeder Pat Carroll whom has been a long time client of Blue Gum Farm, as well as the winning Trainer, Anthony Cummings and Jockey Glen Boss whom all have wonderful associations with Emerald Downs' half brother and resident Blue Gum Farm Stallion, Turffontein.

Spirit of Grace herself was a talented mare winning four races from her twenty-five career starts. She had wins at the Gold Coast, Canterbury Park, Randwick, Gosford and ran 6th in the Listed Glenlogan Park Stakes. However it is her feats as a broodmare which are leaving a lasting impression. She has now had 6 foals to race, 4 winners including the Dual Group 1 Winner, Turffontein. What is probably also important to highlight is Anthony Cummings affinity with this family, having bought the last five foals to go under the auctioneers hammer.

2006 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale Lot 373, Johannesburg x Spirit of Grace - $70,000 - Turffontein (Dual G1 Winner)

2007 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale Lot 244, Danzero x Spirit of Grace, Blue Gum Farm Draft - $90,000 - Frere Dan

2009 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale Lot 98, Elvstroem x Spirit of Grace, Blue Gum Farm Draft - $140,000 - Raised to Rock

2010 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale Lot 432, Churchill Downs x Spirit of Grace, Blue Gum Farm Draft - $135,000 - Emerald Downs

So whats the next story to tell from this family? Blue Gum Farm have the full brother to Emerald Downs and half brother to Turffontein in their 2011 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale Draft, Lot 293.

Friday nights victory highlights how well the first crop of Churchill Downs' are developng. As of Friday night he has had 5 runners to the track, 3 of which are already city performers - Emerald Downs (Moonee Valley Winner), Bladon (Flemington placegetter), Besa Bola (Canterbury placegetter).

What of Emerald Downs famous Half Brother - Turffontein? Upon retirement in May 2010 he could not have been more impressive in settling into his new role at Blue Gum, covering 68 mares, of the 65 mares to be through their full cycle some 54 mares are successfully in foal.

Something tells me there will be a few more news pieces to write about all concerned into the future.
