Abraxa became Verglas’s 38th Stakes winner last weekend by winning the Grosser Preis Der Metallbau Burckhardt GMBH over 1900 metres at Hanover in Germany.
Verglas, who shuttled to Western Australia in 2003 and 2004, produced eight individual stakes winners in Australia in those two seasons. He was Australia’s Leading Sire by Average Earnings Index in 2011-12. Since passing away in 2011, Verglas has started to make a name for himself as a sire of sires.
His Group One Prix Jean Prat winner Stormy River has already produced six individual stakes winners and three stakes placegetters.
The highly talented Blackdoun is another son of Verglas who has proved himself useful at stud. In a short career of only four seasons at stud and covering small number of mares, Blackdoun has produced two stakes winners and a stakes placegetter.
This year we are seeing the first runners by 2009 French 2000 Guineas winner Silver Frost and he is currently fourth on the French First Season Sires list. The road looks promising for this young up and coming stallion, especially considering that his stock will appreciate time.
Glass Harmonium, Verglas’s highest stakes earner with prizemoney in excess of $1.6 million, is working through his first commercial book of mares this season. He has so far produced two outstanding foals from his test matings last season. Both foals are correct with plenty of bone and strength, giving breeders a taste of what is to come.
