Outback Joe lived up to his pedigree when proving too tough for Black Typhoon in a pulsating finish to Monday’s $400,000 Group II Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville.
Ridden with patience by Chad Schofield, Outback Joe was midfield with cover to halfway before beginning to move forward passing the 600m. Damien Oliver on Black Tycoon had followed Schofield from halfway and he was on the quarters of Outback Joe as the field swung for home.
Outback Joe and Black Tycoon both began to loom large 300 metres out and then drove for the line, Outback Joe refusing to yield and at the line having a short-neck to spare over Black Tycoon. Base finished 1 ¼-lengths off third with the $3 favourite Big Memory knocking up in the straight after leading.
"This is a wonderful moment,” winning trainer Nigel Blackiston said.
"I set him for this race, I have always wanted to get him to 3200 metres and he didn’t let us down. Great ride from Chad and credit to Dennis (Marks). He was told this horse had no future but he sent him to us and now he’s won an Adelaide Cup.”
Outback Joe is by Elvstroem from the champion mare Let’s Elope and he will now be given a chance to emulate his mother by winning Australia’s most famous race.
"He’s qualified for the Melbourne Cup now so I say ‘why not. He’s still furnishing and maturing and he’s never disappointed me since I got him. I know that Dennis (Marks) wants to have a crack.” Blackiston said.
