Umatilla Continues to Shine!

Umatilla Continues to Shine!

With the Melbourne Spring Carnival now done and dusted, the racing focus has shifted west where last Saturday, Perth’s annual Super Saturday race program was held.

One of the main races of the day was the Group Two Western Australian Guineas. A field of 15 greeted the starter and at the end of the 1600 metre journey it was the Fred Kersley trained Ihtsahymn who proved superior. Having his eighth career start, the son of Ihtiram showed an electrifying turn of foot in the final 200 metres to overcome his rivals and win going away by a length. It was his fourth career victory and his earnings now stand at a very healthy $386,000.
.
Ihtsahymn is out of the former smart Umatilla race mare Umatune. Umatune was a Stakes winner herself in Western Australia winning the WATC Crystal Slipper Stakes as a 2yo. At stud she has produced six named foals of which five have raced and all have won. Apart from Ihtsahymn, these include Stakes winner Jestatune and Stakes-placed winners Saxon Palace and Ihtsatune.

Umatilla’s daughters have now produced 472 runners for 288 winners of 894 races. This is a winners to runners ratio of 61%. Of these winners, 19 are Stakes winners and another 15 are Stakes placed. Among the best from Umatillas’s daughters are last season’s triple New Zealand Group One winner Final Touch, Group Two winning 2yo Willow Creek, Group Two winning sprinter Catapulted, etc.

Blue Gum Farm was home for Umatilla for his entire stud career. Six individual Group One winners and a total of 31 Stakes winners resulted. We are delighted to own two outstanding mares by him including VRC St Leger winner and South Australian Oaks placegetter Inkster. Inkster has so far produced two foals which include a two year old colt by Encosta De Lago named Almancil. Currently in pre-training he will soon head to the stable of Mick Price. This year Inkster has a big strong colt foal by Redoute’s Choice and is safely in foal to High Chaparral.

Our other Umatilla mare is the multiple Melbourne winner Allapattah. At stud so far she has produced a lovely filly by Real Saga who fetched $55,000 at this year’s Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. She has an outstanding yearling colt by Turffontein who will be offered at next year’s Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. This year she has produced a cracking High Chaparral filly and is safely in foal to Excelebration.

We look forward to Umatilla’s daughters producing more outstanding performers and strongly suggest you watch the career of Ihtsahymn. He is trained by the same trainer, races in the same colours and is owned in similar interests as Champion Northerly and may be the next big thing out of the West.
