With the 2013-14 season now upon us, we look forward very much to the season ahead. But in doing so, we at Blue Gum look back at the season just gone and reflect on what a marvellous period it was.
Elvstroem went on his merry way producing winners week in and week out and continues to prove his worth to the Australian racing and breeding industry. The 2012-13 season was his best yet during which he sired 116 winners of 176 races and had progeny earnings of $3,570,505. He was Australia’s 10th leading sire by winners finishing ahead of the likes of Stratum, Redoute’s Choice, Show a Heart, Not a Single Doubt, Snitzel, Reset, Charge Forward, etc. Elvstroem sired the ATC Gimcrack Stakes winner Brilliant Bisc (picture above) while his older progeny continued to train on well. The Guy Walter trained Sambow’s Girl started the new season perfectly for him with an impressive win at Gosford on August 1st.
The 2013 yearling sales season saw Turffontein represented by his first crop. At the Melbourne Premier venue we saw 10 yearlings by him sold at an average of $41,700. His top priced yearling was Lot 759 Turffontein x Pago Miss colt (pictured above) who realised $77,000 when purchased by Boomer Bloodstock in partnership with Lindsey Smith of Western Australia. These were very pleasing results in what was a sticky enough market for first season stallions! To further strengthen his chances of success the first crop Turffontein’s are now in the stables of quality trainers the likes of Anthony Cummings, Liam Birchley, Michael Hibbs, Joe Pride, Mick Kent, Lindsay Smith, Stephen Theodore, Tony Vasil, Darren Weir, Patrick Payne, Mark Kavanagh, John McArdle, etc. We look forward to these horses making their mark on our racetracks very soon!
We also saw the first crop of yearlings by the beautifully bred Red Arrow well received at the 2013 yearling sales. Consistently stamping his progeny with his own athleticism and stunning good looks, the highest priced Red Arrow yearling was Lot 119 a Colt out of Treasure Box which fetched $68,000 (pictured above).
Trainers who are now preparing Red Arrow progeny include Gerald Ryan, Dan O’ Sullivan, David Jolly, John Hyamn, Mick Price, Michael Moroney, etc. By a recognised sire of sires from one of the best female families in the book, Red Arrow has all the ingredients to make a top stallion.
World Champion Miler and five time Group One winner Canford Cliffs has arrived safely back in Australia and will shortly be here at Blue Gum Farm to commence his second season at stud. A magnificent physical specimen himself, Canford Cliffs has consistently passed on his cracking good looks, wonderful balance and strong colour to his first crop of foals in Europe. One look at the Canford Cliffs filly (out of 2yo stakes winner Alexander Alliance, by Dantime) pictured above tells you why we so anxiously await his first foals here this spring.
After these highlights from the 2012-13 season, we are excited to see what this season brings us!Back
