There are a very select number of thoroughbred families that just continue to produce stakes winner after stakes winner, year after year. Our Red Arrow's family is one such family and the latest addition to its stakes winning ranks is the very talented Mrs Onassis.
Red Arrow is a son of Lady Jakeo, the multiple Group One winning Last Tycoon filly who excelled over the sprint course. Lady Jakeo was precocious enough to win Victoria's premier two year old race, the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield, before training on to win the Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley. At stud Lady Jakeo has produced our Group winner Red Arrow, stakes winner Able Choice and a Brisbane two year old winner named Miss Jakeo. While not scaling the same heights as her stakes winning siblings on the racetrack, Miss Jakeo has certainly done her part at stud. She had already produced the Melbourne Group winning sprinters Miss Judgement and Fifth Avenue Lady before this racing season during which her Mrs Onassis has become a multiple stakes winner with the promise of much more to come.
Owned by her breeder Gerry Harvey and trained for him by master horseman Gerald Ryan, Mrs Onassis has started this spring in scintillating fashion over, you guessed it, the sprint course. An easy first up winner of the Listed Starlight Hcp at Rosehill in August, Mrs Onassis then ran second in the Concorde Stakes (Gr3) before swithching down here to Melbourne. At her first start away from home she ran a creditable third in the Sportingbet Sprint Stakes (Gr3) at Caulfield before making amends with a courageous win at the same track in the Listed Alinghi Stakes on October 20. It would be a brave person to say that, in her current form, Mrs Onassis wont be competitive in any race she competes in over the remainder of the Melbourne Spring.
But these very good equine athletes are not the only examples from this wonderful family. And it's the two year old and sprinting theme that continues to shine through. The likes of Golden Slipper winner and Champion Australian 2YO Merlene, Group winning 2YOs Bold Promise (Champion Australian 2YO filly) and Food For Love (2nd Golden Slipper), amazing sprinter Miss Pennymoney (VRC Newmarket Hcp and MVRC Australia Stakes), etc., etc., they all come from this immediate female family. With a sire of sires like Red Ransom over it, one can easily see why we are so excited about the prospects of Red Arrow.Back
