Helicopter help

Blue Gum Farm prides itself on its pasture maintenance and renovation programme. As we have reported previously, every Autumn we are busy spraying, sowing and fertilising paddocks believing that if you don’t look after your property, it wont look after you.

It is not always easy to get to every corner of a property however. Ours is 1,100 acres in size and although it is mostly beautiful, gently undulating grazing land, there are some rougher parts to it. These areas can, if not properly maintained, become weed infested and seed will quickly spread into other areas which can be the prime grazing country. Unchecked, these aggressive weeds will compete with favourable pasture which can decrease the amount of quality pasture available to the stock.

Along with our border neighbours David Keating and Angus McKinnon, Blue Gum Farm again this year undertook a programme of aerial spraying to assist in our pasture maintenance. Paton Air from Maindample in Victoria were contracted and a total of 740 acres was sprayed for broadleaf control. This was done by helicopter because of the terrain and that made for a spectacular sight as these photographs taken by our Stuart McCormick show.
