A winner and placed second at his only starts at two, Astronomer Royal at just his fourth career start won the French 2,000 Guineas (Gr.1) on good ground defeating Creachadoir (subsequent winner of the Lockinge Stakes (Gr.1)), Excellent Art (subsequent winner St James’s Palace S. (Gr.1) and 2nd in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr.1)) and Spirit One (subsequent winner of the Arlington Million (Gr.1)) in a field which included eight individual Group winners. On dismounting Jockey Colm O’Donoghue was moved to comment that; “…he showed lots of speed in the straight, he certainly is a very good horse.” Previous winners of the French 2,000 Guineas include leading sires; Kingmambo, Linamix, Kendor, Green Tune, Irish River, Riverman, Blushing Groom, Relko, Klairon, Caro, Zeddaan, Kalamoun, Green Dancer, etc. At his next start Astronomer Royal finished third in the Royal Ascot St. James’s Palace Stakes (Gr.1), beaten under 2 lengths by Excellent Art (Gr.1) and Champion Duke Of Marmalade (Gr.1), defeating Dutch Art (high-weight English 2YO), Cockney Rebel (English 2,000 Guineas (Gr.1)) and Creachadoir (Gr.1) on ground rated good to firm. He came back as a four-year-old and won the Curragh Greenlands Stakes (Gr.3) over 1,400 metres carrying 10 stone (63.5kg), defeating Group winners Myboycharlie (Gr.1), Snaefel, Galeota and An Tadh on firm going.
