Her third foal, Elvstroem, set the tone with a blazing victory in the Dubai Duty Free and her sixth foal, Haradasun, has franked the perception that she is the cornerstone of a breeding dynasty set to rival that of Dancing Show. Remarkably, from six foals to race Circles Of Gold will have three sons standing at stud this season. |
The thrilling win of Haradasun in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot recently was another triumph for Australian breeding. Congratulations to Haradasun’s breeders and part-owners Frank and Sally Tagg, Frank and Marie Meduri and Garry and Leone Moffitt and to his other part-owners Coolmore Stud. Since our breeding landscape was revolutionised following Danehill’s first season at Arrowfield Stud here in 1990, the Australian thoroughbred has built a growing reputation on the world scene through high quality racing. With the addition of this new gene pool, mares from Australia and New Zealand are now sought after with extraordinary purchasing power. Just prior to us going to press, the Danehill mare Milanova sold for $5 million! Not in their wildest dreams would Messrs Tagg, Meduri and Moffitt have thought that a mare could be worth such an amount 13 years earlier when their filly out of the Zamazaan mare Olympic Aim broke her maiden in Sydney.
That filly, Circles Of Gold, the subsequent AJC Oaks winner and Group 1 runner up in the Caulfield Cup, Queensland Oaks and WATC Fruit n’ Veg Stakes, now has the unique distinction of being the only Australian-bred mare to produce two international Group 1 winners. The morning after Haradasun’s Royal Ascot win, Blue Gum Farm’s Darryl Sherer was at Caulfield to witness the next generation of Circles Of Gold’s influence, at the stables of the trainer who has shaped her breeding career, Tony Vasil. Not surprisingly, Tony has a number of Elvstroem’s rising two-year-olds coming under his care and on this morning, Darryl saw the Crystal Sprite colt ($200,000 Melbourne Premier) and the Drinkcard Princess filly ($300,000 Melbourne Premier) canter twice on the visco track. Both great looking types Tony was succinct in his summation; “I have got 13 to train and if they are all like the filly out of Drinkcard Princess and the colts out of Crystal Sprite and Miss Bud ($200,000 Australian Weanling Sale) then I will be delighted. They are all well behaved and all have a very good attitude. Obviously its early days but the signs are extremely positive,” said Tony.
The theme continues
to be consistent on the Elvstroem youngsters as they go through their
paces. Sue Ellis from Eliza Park has obviously taken a shine to the
Prenuptial colt ($130,000 Melbourne Premier) that is being broken in
there for Mick Price. “He is special. Very professional, he has
a great attitude and handles himself very well.” Darren Mackereth,
the Head Breaker at Eliza Park, agreed with Sue’s summation describing
the Prenuptial as a “class colt and a super mover.” Darren
generalised about the Elvstroem’s he’s worked with at Eliza
saying, “They are good to break in, all smart and move well.”
Similar sentiments too from trainer Robbie Griffiths; “I have
two Elvstroem fillies (Empire Dawn, $80,000 Melbourne Premier and Plot,
$70,000 Melbourne Premier) and they are both really sharp sorts. The
Empire Dawn filly strode home a furlong the other morning and really
pleased me. If they are all handling themselves like these two fillies
then you would have to be very happy indeed.”
