“He’s a very nice horse, I like him a lot. He has a great temperament and good knees, good bone. He’s going out for a little break and then we’ll get him back in as I think he might have a bit of precociousness about him.”

From a first season live foal crop of 139 there is no shortage of young Elvstroem two-year-olds that are being broken in and educated to stable life at the moment. We have spoken to a number of breakers and trainers and steadily they’ve been adding to a very positive outlook for the breed.

In the last two Blue Gum Farm newsletters we have reported on the progress of youngsters heading to the stables of such notable trainers as Gai Waterhouse, Gerald Ryan, Tony Vasil, Mick Price, Robbie Griffiths, Ricky Yiu (HK) and Quinton Scott. Most recently we spoke to Caulfield trainer Rick Hore-Lacy who was more than happy to comment on the Elvstroem colt out the Jugah mare Star Of The Stud, whom Rick selected and purchased for $150,000 from Blue Gum Farm’s 2007 Melbourne Premier draft. “He’s a very nice horse, I like him a lot. He has a great temperament and good knees, good bone. He’s going out for a little break and then we’ll get him back in as I think he might have a bit of precociousness about him.” Star Of The Stud is a full-sister to the wonderful Juggler and is already the dam of the very promising Delago Star. Another member of that Blue Gum Farm draft was the colt out of the Favourite Trick mare Tiny Temptress, who was knocked down to Clinton McDonald for $90,000. “ A nice colt who has done really well,” remarked Ross McDonald recently. “We don’t rush our babies and he’ll go out to grow and develop. He’s certainly pleased us up till now though.” You might remember that this is one of the Elvstroem’s that leading breaker Julien Welsh commented favourably about to us a little while back. Tiny Temptress is a daughter of the Group winning two-year-old Gilded Angel, from the immediate female family of Group winners Be Discreet and She’s Discreet.

Both colts mentioned above have been nominated for the 2009 Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond Stakes. They make up part of the 40 nominations for the Golden Slipper and 32 for the Blue Diamond which is approximately 28% and 23% respectively of his first foal crop. The split is fairly even on gender as well with 23 colts and 17 fillies nominated for the Golden Slipper whilst 15 colts and 17 fillies have been nominated for the Blue Diamond. What exciting times!
