| Encosta highlights local success | ||
“We have been lucky enough to have had a number of successful stallions here but Encosta has taken it to another level. His remarkable ability to upgrade mares of all types and abilities — a quality that only the great ones possess, coupled with his wonderful fertility, allowed us to meet remarkable demand. " |
Having been runner-up in three of the past four seasons to Danehill, Redoute’s Choice and Flying Spur, the former Blue Gum Farm resident Encosta De Lago has been crowned Australian Champion Sire for season 2007/2008. Standing his first season with us in 1997 for a fee of just $8,500, it is a remarkable result when one considers that all his runners, bar his two-year-olds, were conceived at Blue Gum Farm. “Encosta De Lago was a watershed for Blue Gum Farm and the Victorian breeding industry,” said studmaster Philip Campbell. “We have been lucky enough to have had a number of successful stallions here but Encosta has taken it to another level. His remarkable ability to upgrade mares of all types and abilities — a quality that only the great ones possess, coupled with his wonderful fertility, allowed us to meet remarkable demand. With the expert assistance of our dedicated team, including our vet Dr Angus McKinnon, we were able to cover 200 plus mares in 2002 and 2003, a first for the Australian industry, and over the seven seasons he was here with us we maintained a fertility rate of just over 91%. Both these factors are key to the success that has deservedly come Encosta’s way.” Had Encosta De Lago been Champion Sire in any of the past four seasons, Victoria would have rightfully claimed its first Champion Sire since Century in 1978. Even taking his two year old earnings out of the equation, Encosta De Lago’s progeny earnings for the season just past are still some $2.5 million ahead of the second placed More Than Ready! Importantly, this illustrates that the home of a Champion Australian Sire does not need to be north of the Murray River! That is the belief we had when we started with Encosta and it is the same belief that we have now in Elvstroem and if the industry standard publication ‘Stallions’ is any sort of omen, the last stallion on their front cover to have stood in Victoria was Encosta De Lago. This time it is Elvis and as far as we at Blue Gum Farm are concerned, they are both wonderful thoroughbred examples and ones that we at Blue Gum Farm are very proud to be associated with.
