Umatilla – Proven value

The quality of Umatilla’s pedigree has always been a feature that has attracted breeders, but in the results orientated racing industry it is the quality of his progeny that has ensured that over the 15 seasons he has stood at stud, this unique individual has covered on average 90 mares a season throughout his career.

Breeders looking for a proven stallion at a fantastic value fee this season need go no further than our very own Umatilla. The 1988 first foal of the 1983 Nijinsky mare Dancing Show, who has gone onto be the cornerstone of the most desirable bloodline in Australia, Umatilla was the first stallion from this branch of the Best In Show line to stud. In subsequent years he has been joined in these ranks by his half-brother Hurricane Sky, Platinum Scissors, Al Maher and the 2006/2007 Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice. Like Umatilla, all were Group 1 winners. Umatilla has also been one of the few direct sources of the Champion Mr Prospector horse Miswaki, himself a sire of 94 Stakes winners and 126 Stakes winners as a Broodmare Sire.

Umatilla

The quality of Umatilla’s pedigree has always been a feature that has attracted breeders, but in the results orientated racing industry it is the quality of his progeny that has ensured that over the 15 seasons he has stood at stud, this unique individual has covered on average 90 mares a season throughout his career. As remarkable as that figure is, Umatilla’s fertility rate is even more so. Through his 14 seasons of foaling results Umatilla has an average fertility rate of 89.5% and interestingly, his fertility rate of 91.6% over the past five seasons is superior to the 88.1% achieved over his first five seasons. Such results have always been a point of confidence for breeders and they are figures few stallions anywhere in the world can match.
Now rising 20 years-of-age, Umatilla continues to present as a happy and healthy horse leading up to the coming Spring and a new breeding season.

Since arriving at Blue Gum Farm at the conclusion of his racing career in 1993 Umatilla has been a consistent source of quality winners, a point often lost in the fashionable trait of following ‘hot’ young sires. A producer of Stakes winners from 900 metres to 3,200 metres who has also produced Group 1 winners from 1,200 metres to 3,200 metres, Umatilla has always been the quintessential ‘versatile’ stallion who produces stock that cope well with the rigours of local racing and have the ablity to race on for a number of seasons. The remarkable Umrum and Valedictum are two shining examples of this longevity. Both raced as two-year-olds, (Umrum won three Stakes races at two), and both raced onto ages nine and seven respectively with Valedictum still winning another Stakes race at Randwick as recently as April just passed, followed by a terrific run in the Group 1 AJC Doncaster Handicap!

On the horizion for Umatilla are a couple of pretty smart three-year-olds including the Mick Price-trained Stakes winner Inkster and the Heath Conners-trained Chasm, both of whom look more than capable of building on their early racetrack successes. This year’s VRC St Leger winner Inkster is just about to commence pre-training with a spring campaign beckoning whilst Chasm, an impressive winner of his past three starts, will now be stepped up to Group level when he tackles the Group 2 Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm on June 9. Chasm, who is out of the Flemington winning Al Hareb mare Arabian Poppy, has impressed many of late and his smart win at Randwick in late May was the ticket for the highly successful Conners stable to push the go button with him for the rich Queensland Carnival.

Another string in Umatilla’s bow is his steady rise in the Broodmare Sire ranks. This comes as no great surprise really when one considers his pedigree and the deeds of his own sire Miswaki in this category. The Wayne Nichols-trained three-year-old Diplomatic Force, out of the Umatilla mare Talk It Over, already has a Group 1 placing and a Group 2 win to his name and looms as an excellent chance in the upcoming Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap, also at Eagle Farm on June 9. Diplomatic Force leads a bunch of recent Stakes winners out of Umatilla mares, including Tan Tat De Lago, Fasline and Jestatune, a list that will only continue to grow in the future.

The bottom line is that Umatilla represents unprecedented value at a service fee of just $5,500. Whilst his record speaks for itself we would encourage any breeders that are seeking value, pedigree and a proven track record to make the trip to Euroa to see Umatilla.
