Elvstroem’s rising two-year-olds

The early feedback has been excellent as many of Elvstroem’s rising two-year-olds have completed the first phase of their education. This from Trevor Sutherland who has broken in the Innocent Baby colt ($165,000 Melbourne Premier) for Gai Waterhouse; “He has balance, timing and is as strong as anything I have broken in.” T

Much has been written about the manner in which the first crop progeny of Elvstroem were received at Australia and New Zealand’s major yearling sales, suffice to say that they generated terrific competition from all corners. It’s worth reflecting on the fact that from the 64 yearlings sold at the five major yearling sales (New Zealand Premier, New Zealand Select, Melbourne Premier, Magic Millions Gold Coast and Sydney Easter) Elvstroem returned an average of $115,789 and overall his yearlings grossed over $7.86 million across the two countries. As confidence boosting as those figures are we now move on as much will be made of this first crops performance in the hands of Australia and New Zealand’s leading racehorse handlers. Such is the way that commercial market forces operate!

Elvstroem

The early feedback has been excellent as many of Elvstroem’s rising two-year-olds have completed the first phase of their education. This from Trevor Sutherland who has broken in the Innocent Baby colt ($165,000 Melbourne Premier) for Gai Waterhouse; “He has balance, timing and is as strong as anything I have broken in.” The Innocent Baby colt was due at Tulloch Lodge on June 1 for his first look at stable life.

Also a buyer at Melbourne respected trainer and bloodstock judge Quinton Scott had this to say about his ‘bargain’ colt out of Uccello ($50,000 Melbourne Premier); “He is bombproof, show him once and that is it!” With two colts purchased from the Melbourne Premier (also Belle Ball colt for $70,000) Quinny summed up his pair in this fashion; “I could not speak more highly about them. I don’t think I’ve ever broken in two more intelligent horses.”

Highly successful trainer Gerald Ryan was most enthusiastic when talking to Philip Campbell at the Sydney Easter Sale about his filly out of Bektris ($150,000 Melbourne Premier). “She broke in beautifully and has really gone on and developed physically since we bought her. I am really looking forward to training her.” Just as enthusiastic at the same venue was Ricky Yiu and Dean Hawkes about the Forest Song colt ($170,000 Melbourne Premier). Ricky, the man who puts the polish on World Champion Sprinter Sacred Kingdom, was delighted with Dean’s description of the horse post breaking in. “He has really continued to improve physically since the Sale and we are even happier with him now than when we purchased him,” they commented.

Perhaps most telling though is from the man that broke in Elvstroem himself – Julian Welch, who described Elvstroem as “An out and out gentleman. Perfect horses are few and far between but he was one of them.” To date Julian has broken in 11 Elvstroem yearlings and his overall assessment is; “I’ve found them really n

ice horses to deal with, very nice types who are all quick learners. Physically they all seem to be very well put together and are well balanced.” More specifically he describes the Drinkcard Princess filly ($300,000 Melbourne Premier) as; “Very forward, a very nice filly.” The Tiny Temptress colt ($90,000 Melbourne Premier) as; “A nice colt with a great temperament,” and the Crystal Sprite colt ($200,000 Melbourne Premier) as; “A nice colt – the closest to Elvstroem in physique and temperament.”

While strong yearling sale prices are an excellent endorsement of a stallion’s progeny it is remarks from respected judges the calibre of those quoted that really carry weight as we head to the business end of a horses career. In short, these and other quality horsemen and women are giving Elvstroem’s rising two-year-olds a big tick of approval.
