First Aussie Stakes-Winner for Statue of Liberty

“It's a very good start,” O'Connor said. “You need a very good horse to win a Listed race on debut. She's a very good athlete and a nice filly.”

Young Blue Gum Farm-based sire Statue of Liberty (USA) posted his first Australian stakes-winner when the promising filly Elysees made a winning debut in the Listed SAJC Pewsey Vale Stakes at Morphettville on Adelaide Cup Day.

Giving away race experience proved no hurdle to the John O’Connor-trained filly as she settled down off the pace on the fence and then surged through along the inside to score a very smart win over Arrival (Choisir) and the full-sister to Snitzel, Viennese (Redoute’s Choice) in the 1,050 metre event.

“It's a very good start,” O'Connor said. “You need a very good horse to win a Listed race on debut. She's a very good athlete and a nice filly.”

Elysees was purchased by O’Connor for $50,000 at the 2007 Magic Millions Yearling Sale in Adelaide and would have been eligible for the MM Adelaide 2YO Classic on Wednesday, but connections ran out of time to prepare the filly for that race after she suffered a setback as the result of a virus.

Bred and offered for sale by Tori Park Stud, Elysees is the second stakes-winner for her stakes-winning dam Gift Bouquet, who is also the dam of Group Three SAJC Adelaide Guineas winner Blahnik.
