Churchill Downs retires to Blue Gum Farm in 2007

Churchill Downs ran a terrific second in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic prompting Hayes to remark, “I don’t think I would swap him for any other two-year-old in the country for races of 1,200m and beyond.”

We are delighted to announce the addition of Churchill Downs to our stallion roster this season. By the incomparable sire of sires Danehill, Churchill Downs is a magnificent looking young stallion who retires to Blue Gum Farm as a Group 1 performer at both two and three years of age.

Churchill Downs by Danehill out of the Diesis mare Silken Whisper, a 2003 16HH colt.

“This very talented, cracking good sort of colt represented one of the last opportunities to secure a son of the incomparable sire of sires Danehill,” remarked Blue Gum Farm studmaster Philip Campbell. “Churchill Downs was a legitimate Group One performer at both two and three years of age and we believe that his own precocious talent will see him prove to be a valuable addition to the Australian Breeding Industry,” added Campbell.

Precocious is Churchill Downs to a tee. An August 16 foal he fetched $950,000 as the first foal of his dam, the Diesis mare Silken Whisper, when offered at the 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sale. Produced first up in Melbourne the following December, master trainer David Hayes knew he had a smart one on his hands when Churchill Downs romped home by nearly four lengths. A solid win second up in the Listed Widden Stakes at Randwick three weeks later franked his credentials. Sent back to the Gold Coast for his third start, Churchill Downs ran a terrific second in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic prompting Hayes to remark, “I don’t think I would swap him for any other two-year-old in the country for races of 1,200m and beyond.” Given a freshen up for a tilt at the Golden Slipper Stakes next, Churchill Downs ran tremendously well again to finish third behind the wonder filly Miss Finland. At the end of his two-year-old season, Churchill Downs had amassed $528,000 in earnings.

As a three-year-old Churchill Downs maintained his performance at the elite level with a win in the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley as well as placings in the Group 1 Ascot Vale Stakes, Listed Vain Stakes and Listed Zeditave Stakes. He also finished a close up fourth in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas that season. A member of the final crop of the mighty Danehill, Churchill Downs was a legitimate Group 1 horse as both a two and three year old and now his precocious talent is within the reach of all breeders.

From Danehill’s final crop, Churchill Downs stands at $12,000 plus gst.
